Jordan, Syria Forge Deeper Energy, Water Cooperation

(MENAFN) Jordan and Syria strengthened their partnership on energy and water resources during talks in Amman on Wednesday, aiming to boost bilateral collaboration in vital sectors.

Jordan’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Saleh Kharabsheh, and Water and Irrigation Minister, Raed Abul Saud, convened with Mohammad al-Bashir, the head of Syria’s energy authorities. Discussions focused on enhancing infrastructure, fostering regional integration, and advancing sustainable development initiatives.

The two countries also deliberated on expanding natural gas exports to Syria, in coordination with Qatar and Egypt, to bolster electricity production in the war-torn nation. Since March, Jordan has been supplying Syria with Qatari natural gas via the Arab Gas Pipeline.

Additional talks revolved around increasing the electricity interconnection capacity from 250 to 300 megawatts and improving cooperation in petroleum logistics and power distribution.

On the water front, Minister Abul Saud revealed that a joint technical committee would convene on July 8 to review the 2005 Yarmouk River agreement and consider Jordan’s proposed amendments. He also praised Syria’s recent actions to prevent illegal well drilling in Daraa, which had previously affected Jordan's water resources.

The two countries signed their first water-sharing agreement in 1953, which was amended in 1987 to include the Wahdah Dam project. Although Jordan financed the dam, water flow has often fallen short of expectations—a situation Jordan partially attributes to additional dam construction and well drilling upstream in Syria.
